What Is Reflexology?        History of Reflexology        Benefits of Reflexology        Client Intake Form (Reflexology)

Reflexology Sessions

Reflexology is a complementary therapy in which pressure is applied to the feet or hands to treat a wide range of ailments and to promote psychological well-being and optimum health.  This holistic therapy treats the patient as an individual rather than as a set of physical symptoms.  By applying a controlled amount of pressure to specific points on the hands and feet (reflex areas), the therapist can identify problem areas in all parts of the body.

Use Reflexology to help and heal; but NEVER as a substitute for medical care or medication!  It is capable of reinforcing other therapies and activates your own self-healing powers.

What to Expect During a Reflexology Session

What happens during a reflexology session?
Your first visit will generally take about 15 minutes longer than subsequent treatments.  At this time, you will be asked about your medical history and diet, exercise and general health.  Detailed notes will be taken about your lifestyle before looking at your feet, noting the color, look, and feel of your feet.

Before each treatment, you will enjoy a relaxing aromatherapy and sea salt foot bath (45 & 60-minute sessions only).  Your treatment could be  25, 45, or 60 minutes in duration, depending on your specific needs.  For 25 minute sessions, we can only work specific problem areas, whereas 45 or 60 minute treatments allow a more complete session that entails a "whole body" approach.  The young or elderly will generally be given shorter treatments so as not to over stimulate the system.

During the session you may feel different sensations in your feet.  Sensitivity varies from person to person and from treatment to treatment.  But generally it will be calming and comforting.  It will not tickle since it is a firm pressure to the feet, and it will be adjusted to suit the client.

Is there anything special you should do before or after a reflexology session?

No, just have your feet clean and accessible to get to.  You shouldn't wear pantyhose or something like that to a session.

Disclaimer:  And although drinking water before and after each treatment is beneficial because you are helping to eliminate toxins and waste from the body, I cannot actually tell you to do this.  It is construed as me "prescribing" you to drink water, which only a physician can do.  I am only pointing out that most physicians, health books, and fitness gurus endorse drinking water due to its wonderful effects on the body.  In my opinion, I agree.  Please ask your physician what amount is right for you.

How long does it take to feel the improvement?

Some improvement is felt immediately, but you don't usually feel INSTANTLY better.  If I target an area on your foot to work on to help your shoulder, you don't always just walk away from a session and feel like, "Oh, wow, it doesn't hurt anymore."  On the other hand, headaches sometimes will go away immediately, as will sinus problems if they begin to drain right away.  Those who retain fluids or have edema may get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of a session.  So, in that respect some conditions begin to improve immediately, but not always.

The main idea is that since the body doesn't break down overnight, it doesn't repair overnight. So, some people come to us after being sick a long time and there is no "instant cure." Additionally, reflexology isn't a panacea, and it doesn't work for everybody, like no one thing does.

How frequent should a session be to get the most benefit?

If you're looking for reflexology to be therapeutic—to help some condition—initially a couple times a week would be appropriate. People do come less often for maintenance sessions once they get over most of the crucial areas of their health. Then, they come every other week or once a month, depending on their condition and what you feel is best for you.  Always listen to your body, how you feel, your gut instinct, and as always have regular check-ups with your physician.
